Training Tips for the Paris to Versailles Gravel Route

Our Paris to Versailles route is designed for active cyclists with a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of adventure. While it isn’t an alpine challenge, riders should be prepared for a full day in the saddle and several punchy climbs along the way.

Depending on the route variation and your fitness level, expect approximately 450–650 meters (1,500–2,000 feet) of elevation gain. Most of the climbing comes in short, rolling hills rather than long mountain ascents, but some sections can be a bit steep, but short.

How to Prepare

Build your endurance.Aim to comfortably ride for 3–4 hours before your trip. Weekend rides of 40–60 km are excellent preparation.

Practice climbing. If you live in a hilly area, include short climbs in your training. Focus on maintaining a steady effort rather than sprinting up hills.

Ride mixed surfaces. Our route combines pavement, gravel paths, forest roads, and occasional rougher sections. Experience on gravel is helpful but not required.

Get comfortable descending. Many riders focus on climbing, but confidence on descents can make the day much more enjoyable.

Train your fueling strategy.Practice eating and drinking while riding. Small amounts of food every 30–45 minutes will help keep your energy levels consistent throughout the ride.

Don’t forget recovery.Arrive well rested, hydrated, and ready to enjoy the experience. Fresh legs are worth more than one last hard workout before your trip.

Most Importantly

The goal is to enjoy some of the best cycling terrain surrounding Paris, explore the forests and countryside beyond the city, and arrive in Versailles with a smile on your face. We’ll adjust the pace, distance, and route to suit the group’s fitness and experience level, ensuring everyone has a memorable day on the bike.
